Gvaramia's detention took place live on several TV channels as the oppositionist attempted to enter the Droa office to observe a search that had begun several hours earlier. Also today, police searched the headquarters of several opposition parties, including Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement (UNM) party, as part of a case of “organization of group violence.”
The case is related to mass protests outside the Georgian parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue, where thousands of activists from youth organizations, including the Coalition for Change and the UNM, are protesting against the decision of Irakli Kobakhidze's government to postpone discussion of Georgia's EU membership until 2028.
During the night, protests escalated into clashes with Interior Ministry units, and police confiscated fireworks and firecrackers that protesters used against security forces.
In the October 26 elections, the Coalition for Change came second with about 10% of the vote, beating the UNM.
Earlier, the Georgian government announced the failure of the fourth coup attempt in the country.
