After the accession of six countries to BRICS, the economic weight of the bloc will grow to 37% of global GDP. RBC writes about this, referring to the data of the IMF and the World Bank for 2022.
Recall that at the BRICS summit, which was held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, a number of countries expressed their desire to join the bloc. Among them are 20 states that have announced their desire so far unofficially, and six countries that will become members of the association from January 1, 2024. These are Argentina, the UAE, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
From January, the union will account for 37% of global GDP at purchasing power parity and nearly half (46%) of the world's population.
For example, Saudi Arabia's dollar GDP is estimated by the IMF at $1.1 trillion. Ethiopia is the leader among the incoming new countries in terms of population (123 million people).
The UAE is the leader in exports, which amounted to about $600 billion in 2022.
The U.S. Congress expressed the opinion that the BRICS expansion will destroy the dollar. And Russia believes that in the long term it will help strengthen the ruble's position.
