Swiss ecologists from the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics of the Zurich University of Technology have developed a three-dimensional model of the world ocean and its currents. Actions were carried out to analyze the process of acidification of sea water caused by carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Science Advances.
The research showed that the growth of carbon in the atmosphere not only increases the greenhouse effect, but also leads to an increase in the acidity of the world's oceans, which threatens coral reefs and other marine ecosystems.
The researchers found that during this period, the acidification zone reached an average depth of 1000 meters, and in some cases - even 1500 meters.
