The Smolny press service reported that in St. Petersburg they plan to erect a monument in honor of the victory in the Northern War, which was fought by the young Russian Empire under the leadership of Peter the Great from 1700 to 1721. The corresponding triumphal pillar will appear on Primorsky highway near “Lakhta Center”.
The initiative to erect this monument was taken by Gazprom through its Fund for Support of Cultural Initiatives. The project has already been prepared by architect Mikhail Mamoshin and sculptor Stepan Mokrousov-Guglielmi, and Governor Alexander Beglov approved it.
According to the project, the bronze column with a height of 24.3 meters will be crowned by a 9.5-meter-high figure of Emperor Peter. The whole structure will be installed on a granite pedestal. The total height of the monument will be 82 meters. This is almost twice as high as the Alexander Column on Palace Square.

Alexander Beglov said that the new imported and domestic construction equipment will make it possible to lay subway tunnels to new stations much faster.
