What makes the situation unusual is that the appearance of the faults was not predicted by seismic activity, making the reasons for their occurrence a mystery. Nevertheless, the damage is already evident: cracks are crossing roads, penetrating courtyards and damaging at least ten buildings.
The first signs of the anomaly were noticed about a week ago near the ancient Church of the Virgin Mary, but by now the faults have already reached impressive proportions, stretching 150 meters in length.
Prof. Efthimios Lekkas, a leading Greek seismologist, arrived on the scene to assess the situation. According to him, it is a “geological process in development” that requires detailed study. Preliminary hypotheses link what is happening to the sudden displacement of underground layers, leading to soil subsidence and deformation of building foundations.
The authorities of the island, realizing the seriousness of the threat to the safety of residents and tourist attraction of the region, are taking emergency measures. The Mayor of Heraklion Alexis Kaloyrinos personally coordinates the work of the services inspecting potentially dangerous objects. Four residential buildings have already been declared uninhabitable and their inhabitants have been given temporary shelter. Special attention is paid to public spaces such as playgrounds, cafes and narrow streets that attract tourists with their color.
Recall, earlier in Crete were found fossilized traces of ancient people over 6 million years old, and in early April, archaeologist Evans found in Crete the labyrinth of the Minotaur.
