More than 1,200 aftershocks recorded in Turkey after the earthquake

The seismological activity in the Turkish province of Balikesir has not subsided after the powerful earthquake that occurred last Sunday. Specialists have recorded a colossal number of repeated tremors, which continue to keep residents of several regions of the country in suspense.

According to the latest data from the Disaster Management Authority (AFAD), as of Wednesday morning, August 13, 1,235 aftershocks have been recorded in the region. It is specified that 19 of these aftershocks had a magnitude above 4, which indicates significant seismic intensity in the earthquake center.

The main shock with magnitude 6.1 was recorded on Sunday. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the area of Syndyrgy. The tremors were felt over a wide area, including neighboring provinces and even Istanbul, which caused concern among millions of citizens.

According to the information announced earlier by the head of the Turkish Interior Ministry Ali Yerlikaya, one person died as a result of the earthquake, another 29 received injuries of varying degrees of severity. Rescue work and assessment of damage were immediately started in the affected areas.

Minister of Environment, Urban Development and Climate Change Murat Kurum reported serious damage. According to him, some 193 buildings were identified in the provinces of Balıkesir, Manisa and Bursa, which either collapsed completely or were critically damaged and cannot be rebuilt.
