Palmerston the cat, an ex-“employee” of the British Foreign Office, will go to Bermuda where he will “work” with the governor.
According to The New York Times, Palmerston, the black-and-white cat appointed in 2016 as the British Foreign Office's chief mouser, has announced his retirement. It later emerged that he had accepted a new position as a cat relations consultant to the governor of Bermuda.
Palmerston became a symbol of British diplomacy. His career was filled with high-profile incidents. For example, the quadriplegic had a long-standing rivalry with Larry the cat, who became the chief mouser in Downing Street. In 2016, Larry tried to enter the Foreign Office grounds and the cats fought. Downing Street's chief mouser suffered injuries and required veterinary care.
Lord Simon Macdonald, a former Foreign Secretary, said he was often asked about the fate of the cat after Palmerston left. Macdonald is delighted that Palmerston is back on track.
Earlier it was reported that the new British Prime Minister Starmer will bring his cat to the residence in Downing Street.
