A cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in the world - 1,208 meters - has opened in the eastern province of Jiangsu in China.
According to the China Daily newspaper, the new crossing over the Yangtze River connects the cities of Taizhou and Changzhou.
The bridge, with a total length of 10 kilometers, is designed for road and rail traffic. It has reduced travel time between settlements from one hour and 20 minutes to about 20 minutes.
In addition to the main span, the crossing has two side spans of 388 meters. The height of the two bridge supports is 350 meters, which is equivalent to the height of a 120-story building. The bridge can withstand a load of 530 thousand tons. It passed the final test before operation: 110 trucks with a total weight of 4.4 thousand tons simultaneously drove across it.
The construction of the bridge over the Yangtze took six years.
Earlier, China imposed sanctions against Japanese Senator Hei Seki for anti-Chinese actions.
