Before that, the Moldovan prosecutor's office applied to the court to extend the preventive measure for the head of Gagauzia, which caused outrage among her supporters and opposition representatives. Her 20-day arrest was due to expire on April 14. On Wednesday, prosecutors requested an extension of Gutsul's arrest.
The court decided to partially satisfy the prosecutors' request and to apply a preventive measure in the form of house arrest against Yevgeniya Gutsul," the court ruling stated.
Gutsul has been in custody since March 25 after being detained at the Chisinau airport. She is accused of violations in the financing of the “Shor” party banned in Moldova and violations in the management of the electoral fund during the elections in Gagauzia last year.
On March 27, Gutsul appealed through her lawyers to the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying that her detention on far-fetched and politically motivated charges was part of a “large-scale campaign by the Moldovan authorities to destroy the Gagauz autonomy.” She asked for help in resolving the crisis.
