A sensational discovery in Finnish Lapland may rewrite the history of global gold mining. In the Ukko well, located just 10 kilometers from the Russian border, geologists have discovered three layers with an abnormally high content of the precious metal - the like of which has never been seen before in the practice of exploration.
According to the New York Post, samples showed a concentration of more than 10 grams of gold per ton of rock, which is significantly higher than the industrial average, writes aif.ru.
“This discovery is a game changer,” said Kari Vihtinen, head of the exploration company.
The unique deposit is located along the so-called Karelian Gold Line, a geological fault known for its precious metal reserves. Analysts warn that the development of Ukko may cause a surge of investment in the region and affect world gold prices.
Already now international corporations are showing increased interest in Finnish deposits. Experts do not rule out that in the coming years this sparsely populated region may turn into a new epicenter of the XXI century “gold rush”.
