Svetlana Masterkova, a two-time Olympic champion in running and the 28-year-old world record holder in the 1,000 meters, believes her achievement could be surpassed by a transgender athlete. She pointed to recent changes in sporting rules aimed at removing Russian records from world tables.
Thus, Masterkova also recalled her record in the outdoor mile run, which belonged to her for 23 years before it was broken by Dutch runner Sifan Hassan in 2019. She emphasized in an interview with Gazeta.Ru that Hassan was able to achieve it thanks to her efforts before the Olympic Games.
The Russian noted that she set her records immediately after the Olympics in Atlanta in August 1996, when her body had already exhausted its main resources.
