Rioters in Bangladesh stormed the Sherpur district jail in the north of the country and started a fire, causing some 500 inmates to escape.
On Monday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister left their official residence in Dhaka for a safer location due to the unrest that broke out. TV channel News18 reported that Hasina resigned and flew to the Indian city of Agartala. The Hindu publication writes that the former prime minister is seeking asylum in the UK. Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse reported that thousands of protesters stormed the palace abandoned by Hasina.
A crowd armed with sticks and improvised weapons held a protest during curfew on Monday afternoon. At a certain point, people marched towards the prison, broke down the gates and started a fire. About 500 inmates managed to escape from the prison, UNB reported.
