New blood type discovered: a woman who can only be a donor for herself

A new blood group system, Gwada negative, has been identified in France

On the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean Sea lives a woman with a rare phenomenon that has come to light thanks to the French Blood Establishment (EFS). Fifteen years ago, she was diagnosed with an unusual antibody during a pre-operative examination.

Scientists could not understand the nature of this phenomenon for a long time, but in 2019, thanks to high-precision DNA sequencing, they found a unique genetic mutation. The woman inherited it from both parents. According to the researchers, this mutation is “compatible only with herself.”

Pravda.Ru writes that the name “Gwada negative” was chosen in honor of the patient's origin. It is easy to remember and sounds good in different languages.

Now scientists hope to find other carriers of this rare blood group. This will help improve medical care for people with unusual blood types. About it reports sciencealert.

Earlier it was reported that the difference between blood groups lies in the quality of the protein in their composition.
