Russian scientists have developed a robot colonoscope with AI

Scientists from Sechenov University are working on the development of a robotic colonoscope using artificial intelligence technologies designed for timely detection of colon cancer. According to the university's press service, a prototype of the device is expected to be ready by 2027.

The statement said that a team of experts including engineers, robotics specialists, programmers and doctors from the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University are developing an advanced colonoscope equipped with five cameras providing a 340-degree panoramic view, as well as an artificial intelligence system that analyzes the images while examining the inside of the colon.

According to Nail Salmanov, an engineer at the Institute of Bionic Technologies and Engineering at Sechenov University, one of the main problems with conventional colonoscopy is the possibility of missing polyps, which can lead to the development of colorectal cancer. The device under development will significantly reduce the likelihood of missing neoplasms during the procedure.

First, we plan to use five cameras instead of one, which provides a view of 340 degrees versus the standard 170 degrees. This eliminates the appearance of so-called blind spots. Secondly, all the images are summarized into a single stitched panorama on one screen, which significantly reduces the cognitive load on the doctor. Thirdly, AI analysis works in real time as a “safety net” for the specialist, providing an independent “second opinion”. And finally, multispectral illumination significantly improves tissue visualization," the specialist summarized in a conversation with TASS.

According to the press service, the prototype of the manual colonoscope will be created in 2026, and the robotic version - in 2027.
