Scientists have found that the sugar substitute sucralose damages cellular DNA. The discovery was made by experts at Karolinska University, writes the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B.
The claim is based on a series of laboratory tests conducted on human blood cells as well as intestinal wall tissue. Scientists were trying to find out how the cells reacted to the sweetener and to the compound sucralose-6-acetate. This is a chemical compound formed as a result of sucralose metabolism in the body.
The study showed that the substance is toxic to both DNA and intestinal mucosa.
