Russian mycologists have made a rare scientific discovery - a new species of fungi of the genus Pleuromyces has been discovered in the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve (Primorsky Krai). This is only the second known to science representative of this genus, which makes the discovery especially valuable for the world mycology.
What is known about the new species? Miniature (1-3 mm in height). It consists only of caps without pedicels. Rare plates under the cap. Grows only on fallen branches of Rhododendron phori. Participates in the decomposition of wood, supporting the ecosystem. The closest “relative” is Pleuromyces Hungarian (known since 2018), reports the press service of the reserve.
The genus Pleuromyces is extremely understudied. The new species will help to understand the evolution of fungi. Emphasizes the value of the Sikhote-Alin Reserve. Discovery: summer 2024 in Primorye. Authors of the discovery: Ekaterina Malysheva (Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences), Tatiana Svetasheva (Tula Peduniversity), Svetlana Bondarchuk (Sikhote-Alin Reserve).
