A tunnel will be built near the Alexander Nevsky Bridge in St. Petersburg in 2026.

A new tunnel is to be built in St. Petersburg near one of the city's most famous bridges, the Alexander Nevsky Bridge. The structure will be approximately 623 meters long and will be part of a project to build a new exit from the bridge to the right bank and renovate Malookhtinsky Prospekt.

The government procurement portal already has an announcement for the work, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, costing approximately 107 million rubles. The project also includes the development of city development plans and a design for the future bridge exit.

The idea of building this tunnel under the bridge has been discussed in St. Petersburg since 2012 to relieve traffic congestion in the south and north of the city. It was planned that cars would travel through it from south to north, and back along the embankment.

In 2019, authorities wanted to make the tunnel 8 meters deep, but some residents opposed it, and the idea was ultimately abandoned.

It was previously announced that the metro and commuter trains in St. Petersburg are planned to be combined into a single system.
