Dogs are prohibited on playgrounds, beaches, and near schools, kindergartens, and clinics. In apartment buildings, leashes must not exceed 80 centimeters. Only adults 16 years of age and older are permitted to walk dogs taller than 40 cm at the withers.
Leaving a dog unattended and walking several large animals at the same time is also prohibited unless you are sober. Pets are also prohibited in stores or cafes, except for dog-friendly establishments. Violations carry a fine of 500 to 5,000 rubles, depending on the violation.
Mandatory dog registration has been lifted for now, according to KP-Petersburg, pending federal decisions and standards across Russia. Dog owners are still not required to microchip their animals or officially register them.
Furthermore, the city has taken measures to control stray dogs. A plan has been developed for their capture and vaccination, as well as for public awareness. In the future, specialists will regularly publish reports on the number of stray animals and measures taken to control them. However, for now, no specific changes beyond the work already underway have been announced.
