St. Petersburg musicologists to study 17th century manuscripts from Solovki

Restored chants of the monastery charter will be performed on Solovki

Specialists from the St. Petersburg State Conservatory will begin studying ancient musical manuscripts from the 17th century that have been preserved in the Solovetsky Monastery. The work will be carried out within the framework of the scientific and educational school «Okoem» and will focus on the creative legacy of the monastery's chartermaster Ignatius Korsakov, who was a distant relative of the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The main focus will be on studying the Znamenny notation used to record liturgical chants before the church reforms of Patriarch Nikon. Scientists will conduct a comparative analysis of pre-reform chants with later examples, including materials from the collection of the Solovetsky Museum-Reserve.

Director of the Intellectual Center of NArFU Svetlana Tyukina reported that the result of the study will be a concert in the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral, where the restored chants will be performed. In addition, the prepared materials will be included in the educational game "The Sound of Solovki" and reference books for tour guides, Gazeta.SPb reports.

Earlier, a deacon from Penza explained how to properly dispose of church valuables.

The Russian Orthodox Church also supported prayers for an easier transition to the next world.
