Reforms in international organizations such as the UN are now urgently needed. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the margins of the BRICS summit in Kazan.
Reforming the UN development institutions and global financial structures is also long overdue,” the Russian leader said.
The President emphasized that the importance of developing countries in the global economy has changed significantly in recent times.
In addition, Putin noted that the UN structure should be adjusted in accordance with “the conditions of the 21st century.”
Earlier, he also expressed the opinion that the implementation of the UN sustainable development program is stalling.
Russia's Vladimir Putin also reiterated that the UN should remain a key player in maintaining peace and security in the international arena.
The world organization must continue to play a central role in maintaining peace and security and promoting sustainable and progressive growth,” he said.
Putin also noted the symbolism of the fact that the BRICS summit meeting is taking place on UN Day.
The 16th BRICS Heads of State Summit, which will be the key event of Russia's presidency of the group, is taking place in Kazan from October 22-24. BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia became full members of the organization. This summit in Kazan will be the first to be attended by the new members of the group. Representatives of more than 30 countries are expected to attend. Among the foreign leaders visiting Kazan are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaposa.
