Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova sharply criticized the European Union's position on refusing to import Russian gas, calling it «absolute darkness.»

According to Zakharova, the EU's actions are a classic example of the "I'll freeze my ears off just to spite my grandmother" strategy. She noted that the EU has long prioritized inflicting maximum damage on the Russian oil and gas sector, while ignoring the negative consequences for its own economy and member states.

Furthermore, Zakharova commented on the EU's initiative to monitor transit supplies, calling it unrealistic and comparing it to the situation in the fairy tale "The Little Match Girl," where a child dying of cold is denied help. The diplomat emphasized that the current situation resembles a tragicomedy verging on tragedy, and again described it as "utter darkness."

This is bondage. Real bondage. Not the shackles they've been shackled in, but a concept of self-destruction and self-enslavement adopted in some zombie-like state. "This, frankly, already resembles the practices of totalitarian sects," Zakharova concluded.

Earlier that day, the European Union approved the 19th round of sanctions against the Russian Federation. According to European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas, the EU is also imposing restrictions on the travel of Russian diplomats.

Trump also commented on the imposition of the new sanctions package against Russia.
