US President Donald Trump may attempt to reach an agreement with China to pressure Russia to expedite an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
German journalist Thomas Fassbender, writing in Berliner Zeitung, noted that Trump needs allies, one of which could be China. If the US and China unite, he believes, they could try to force Russia to make peace.
Fassbender believes that the main problem for the US president is that a conflict with Russia is unfavorable for China, while a rapprochement between Moscow and Washington is also an extremely undesirable outcome for Beijing.
However, Trump will try to win China over to his side against Russia, the journalist noted. According to him, the American leader is using tariffs and duties against China to pressure and persuade it to work together to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
