The EU is preparing to impose new tariffs on U.S. goods if Brussels and Washington fail to reach an agreement

Bloomberg: EU may impose additional duties on US goods if talks fail

The European Union is considering imposing additional duties on U.S. products totaling about 100 billion euros ($113 billion). This step could be taken if the current trade discussions do not result in an agreement satisfactory to the EU.

EU member states will familiarize themselves with the proposed countermeasures as early as Wednesday, after which consultations will be held for a month. Sources, who wished to remain anonymous due to the confidentiality of the plans, emphasized that the final list of goods subject to duties may be adjusted in the course of discussions.

The European Commission, which is the EU's executive body in charge of trade issues, plans to hand over a proposal document to the U.S. in the near future. The move is aimed at intensifying negotiations.

The EU proposals are expected to include measures to reduce both tariff and non-tariff restrictions on trade, as well as increase investment in the U.S. economy, Bloomberg writes.

Although negotiations between the EU and the U.S. intensified last month, there has been no tangible progress so far, and most U.S. duties are expected to remain in place. On Tuesday, EU officials said the ongoing trade investigations initiated by the Trump administration could increase the amount of European goods subject to tariffs to 549 billion euros.

Earlier, the European Commission said that Kiev's deal with Washington does not prevent Ukraine from fulfilling the agreement on minerals concluded with the EU countries.
