Family psychologist and psychotherapist Anastasia Kardyakos said that due to daily events that knock people off balance physically and mentally, it is very difficult for them to overcome their emotions. But despite these circumstances, there is a way to reduce anxiety and “ground” oneself emotionally.

In an interview with Radio 1, Kardyakos noted that there is an “emergency” technique that works according to the “5-4-3-2-1” method. To unload emotionally, you need to mentally name 5 things in front of you, 4 things that your skin feels (e.g., clothing), then 3 sounds, 2 smells, and something you can taste. According to her, this “brings you back to the ‘here and now’” and also allows you to balance your emotional state.
