Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in the body. It is associated with an increased risk of developing many serious diseases that can significantly reduce the quality of life and even lead to premature death, comments Natalya Leontieva, a general practitioner.

“Arterial hypertension, which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure. Ischemic heart disease, which leads to impaired blood supply to the heart and can cause angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. Heart failure - the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Atherosclerosis - the deposition of cholesterol on the walls of arteries, leading to their narrowing and blockage. Insulin resistance or aka type 2 diabetes - decreased sensitivity of cells to insulin leads to high blood sugar levels. Osteoarthritis - destruction of the cartilage of the joints, causing pain, stiffness and limited mobility. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Obesity, which is a disease in itself, has a very wide range of effects on the entire human body in a negative way,” says the therapist.

In addition, being overweight increases the strain on the spine and can lead to back pain. Fat accumulation in the liver, which can lead to inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver. The formation of gallstones in the gallbladder can cause abdominal pain and digestive disorders.

Obesity can even provoke cancer. Thus, there is an increased risk of breast, endometrial, colon, kidney, esophageal and other types of cancer.
Also, excess body weight causes disorders of the reproductive system: in women - menstrual disorders, infertility, and in men - decreased potency, infertility.

“Obesity is a serious problem, but it can be prevented and controlled. Follow a healthy lifestyle, watch your weight and have regular medical check-ups. If a person has a suspicion of obesity, he or she should consult a general practitioner, endocrinologist or nutritionist to develop an individualized treatment plan,” concludes the GP.
