A doctor debunked myths about IVF and named the real risks of the procedure.

Doctor: IVF success depends on age and health, not statistics

Extracorporeal fertilization (IVF) is surrounded by myths that prevent couples with infertility from making decisions, said Gunai Salayeva, a reproductive therapist and obstetrician-gynecologist. According to her, the success of the procedure is not guaranteed and depends on the woman's age, sperm quality, endometrial condition, concomitant diseases and lifestyle. Statistics reflect the general trend, not the outcome for a particular pair.

Children born through IVF are no different from those born naturally, and the genetic risks are no higher. Previously, multiple pregnancies resulted from the transfer of several embryos; now, single embryo transfer (SET) is more commonly used, reducing the risk of complications and premature birth.

Ovarian stimulation temporarily affects hormonal levels without causing long-term problems or early menopause. IVF is expensive, but public and private programs help reduce the burden. For many couples, the procedure is an investment in the possibility of becoming parents.

Salayeva emphasized in an interview with Gazeta.Ru that IVF requires a conscious approach and reliable information.

Earlier in Moscow, an 11-year-old schoolboy with a congenital defect had his heart replaced.

The doctor also revealed the reasons why even healthy foods can hinder weight loss.
