Canada may become a real competitor of Russia in the Arctic, political scientist Alexander Shpunt believes. In his opinion, Canada's activation of the Northwest Passage project poses a major threat to Russia's economic interests in the region.
“Intensification of this project poses a direct threat to Russia's economic interests. If Canada and the United States seriously engage in this project, involving their considerable resources, Russia will have a completely new front for competition,” Shpunt said in a media interview.
According to the expert, if the U.S. joins the Canadian project, the struggle for new transportation routes will increase, which may have a negative impact on the prospects for the development of the Russian Northern Sea Route (NSR). URA.RU.
Earlier, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin noted that the Northern Sea Route is one of the most promising transportation arteries in the world and has a huge competitive advantage for Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also repeatedly invited partners to develop the NSR and the North-South corridor.
Shpunt's statement came against the backdrop of Trump's accusations against EU countries and information about the possible return of global energy traders to Russia if sanctions are lifted, which creates a complex and multifaceted picture of modern geopolitics and economics.
