Chinese seismologists have already registered 515 aftershocks in the disaster zone in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), following the main, most powerful earthquake. This was reported by China Central Television.
It is noted that about 95% of the ongoing seismic activity in the area of the city of Shigajie amounted to tremors of magnitude below 3.0. The strongest of them reached 4.4 magnitude.
The earthquake in TAR occurred on the morning of January 7. As a result of seismic activity, numerous residential houses and infrastructure facilities were destroyed. More than 400 military personnel are involved in rescue operations. Residents of the disaster zone have been evacuated. Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed to make every effort to eliminate the consequences.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake on the border of China and Nepal was 7.1. The epicenter was located 163 km southwest of Shigadze, where about 80 thousand people live, and the origin was at a depth of 10 km. The Russian Embassy in Beijing said that there were no data on Russians in the disaster zone. According to official data, at least 126 people were killed and another 188 were injured.
A little more than a year ago, on December 19, 2023, in Jishishishan-Baoan-Dongxiang-Salar Autonomous County of the People's Republic of China, there was also an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2. At that time, the number of victims of the underground element amounted to more than 100 people.
