UNESCO: Anti-tourist rallies in Spain could spread to other countries

For several weeks, mass protests against foreign vacationers in Spain have not subsided. If the causes of discontent are not eliminated, the rallies may go beyond Spain.

Peter De Breen, a UNESCO senior fellow for sustainable tourism, said that Spain may not be the only country where citizens are taking to the streets en masse to protest against the influx of foreign tourists.

For weeks now, Spaniards have been rallying in the country's resort areas and demanding vacationers go home. At the moment, the protests have covered Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria and a number of other cities. The reason is the sharp rise in the cost of living in the resorts, as businesses have jacked up prices for rent and various services.

De Brin believes that the situation will not improve in the near future, and even vice versa, may take over other countries, if the problem is not addressed at the highest level. In Spain, some vacationers have already refused to vacation at the usual resorts.

Russians have also faced speculative price gouging at resorts. In Anapa, train tickets were recently sold for 73,000 rubles.

Tour traffic to Russia from abroad in 2024 increased by more than a third compared to 2023 - up to 4.2 million people, according to the press service of the Russian government.

Citizens of the Middle East and Asia, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman and Qatar, have become more active in visiting Russia.

In 2024, tourist flow to Russia from Southeast Asian countries, in particular from Indonesia and Malaysia, has quadrupled. The PRC and India also show growth: twice and 30% respectively.

The Cabinet of Ministers noted that the effect is given by the previously launched measures: electronic visa, group visa-free travel, promotion of Russia's tourist brand abroad.

The international air communication of the Russian Federation with other countries is also expanding. Last year direct flights were opened with Vietnam, Indonesia and Bahrain. The route network with the PRC, UAE, Uzbekistan and Belarus has significantly expanded.

Earlier it was reported that S7 Airlines is selling tickets at a discount of up to 50%.
