Scientists from Stanford University have created a drug that can completely cure HIV. The compound EBC-46 was originally developed to fight cancer, but in the course of research it has shown effectiveness against HIV.

According to the journal Science Advances, the compound is naturally found in the fruit of the blush tree, which grows in northeastern Australia. EBC-46 binds to the enzyme protein kinase C (PKC), which plays an important role in processes associated with HIV and other diseases.

It activates HIV-infected cells, making them “visible” to immunotherapy. By testing the compound on latent HIV-infected cells, the scientists learned that it could activate up to 90% of dormant cells. This is four times more effective than the agent bryostatin.

Meanwhile, the compound is currently being used to treat soft tissue sarcoma in humans. The therapy shows good results. It is also being used to treat cancer in dogs.

Now scientists intend to start testing EBC-46 against HIV.
