Delicious and crunchy seeds are a favorite treat for many. But, as it turns out, they can hide serious health risks. Recent research conducted in St. Petersburg has revealed the presence of the carcinogenic metal cadmium in the seeds of popular Russian brands.
Cadmium is a heavy metal that accumulates in the body and has a devastating effect on the kidneys, nervous system and bone tissue. It is also known as a carcinogen, increasing the risk of cancer.
Specialists analyzed samples of seeds of ten well-known brands, purchased in stores in St. Petersburg. The results were disappointing: in all samples the concentration of cadmium was found close to the maximum permissible level. The highest concentration (0.19 mg/kg) was recorded in the seeds of a Moscow region manufacturer, and the lowest (0.05 mg/kg) - in the capital's brand.
Sunflower as a crop is prone to accumulation of cadmium from polluted soil. The main sources of pollution are industrial emissions and use of chemical fertilizers.
Accumulation of cadmium in the body occurs slowly but steadily. It can lead to the development of serious diseases such as:
Kidney failure: cadmium damages the kidneys, impairing their function.
Osteoporosis: cadmium interferes with calcium absorption, making bones brittle.
Nervous diseases: cadmium can interfere with the nervous system, causing symptoms ranging from headaches to tremors.
Cancer: cadmium is a carcinogen, increasing the risk of developing various types of cancer.
It is impossible to completely eliminate contact with cadmium because it is present in the environment. However, it is possible to reduce the risks by following recommendations. For example, do not consume seeds in large quantities. In addition, give preference to brands that undergo strict quality control.
We would like to remind you that dentists, among others, have warned about the danger of regular consumption of porridge, and the habit of chewing seeds was named one of the most destructive habits for teeth.
