The news of a cancer diagnosis turns life upside down. Fear, despair, anger - this is only a small part of the emotions a person faces. How not to break under the weight of this news and find the strength to fight? Psychologist Maya Golubeva answers these questions in a conversation with RuNews24.ru. According to the expert, the diagnosis of cancer is not a verdict.

“It is important to remember that you are not alone in your misfortune, there are many people who are ready to help you on the road to recovery,” the expert reminds.

In the first hours, when the doctor voiced a terrible diagnosis, the psychologist advises to accept your feelings.

“Do not suppress your emotions, give yourself time to experience fear and despair. Research as much information as you can about your disease, treatments and prognosis. This will help you feel more confident and in control. Don't hesitate to seek help from loved ones, friends, family, psychologists, and support groups. It is important to find a doctor you trust and with whom you feel comfortable talking. Together with your doctor, develop a treatment plan. And, of course, pay attention to your mental health,” advises psychologist Golubeva.

But how not to give up and find the strength to fight? First of all, it is worth focusing on the present. The psychologist insists: do not dwell on the past and do not worry about the future. Live today and enjoy every moment.

“Find something that brings you joy and peace of mind. It can be a job, a hobby, socializing with loved ones or helping others. Believe in your strength and know that you are capable of overcoming any difficulties. In addition, each person is unique and experiences illness in his or her own way. Do not compare yourself with others and do not feel guilty for not meeting someone else's expectations, “- comments the psychologist.

Also according to the specialist, it is worth creating your own “support team”. To do this, you need to surround yourself with people who will support and believe in the strength of the patient with oncology. On the road to recovery, you should not give up your favorite activities and hobbies. And the most important thing is to remember that every oncology patient is not alone in his or her misfortune. There are many people who have survived cancer and are willing to share their experiences.

“The diagnosis of cancer is not the end of life. Believe in a miracle, never lose hope for recovery. Keep a positive attitude, believe in yourself and follow the advice of doctors, and you will be able to defeat the disease and return to a full life,” summarizes psychologist Maya Golubeva.
