The tombs are located in the ancient city of Blaundus, 180 kilometers east of the Aegean Sea. They are filled with sarcophagi, many of them containing several bodies of the dead. Families have used these tombs for burials for many generations. Funerary objects included mirrors, tiaras, rings, bracelets, hairpins, medical instruments, belts, and bowls.
The city was built during the reign of Alexander the Great. The site was first found more than 150 years ago, but excavations did not begin until 2018.
Experts have identified temples, a theater, a public bath, a gymnasium, a basilica and more.
