The number of people who are struggling to make ends meet has doubled over the past year in Britain. This was reported by Bloomberg.

In the last nine months of 2022, the share of British households with little or no discretionary income (where there is spare cash left over after taxes and basic living needs are met) doubled from 20 to 40 percent, according to the Asda Income Tracker.

Low-income Britons were the hardest hit. They had 2.6 pounds (about 190 rubles) of free money for a week, last year the figure was equal to 55 pounds (about 4 thousand rubles).

Loughborough University researcher Abigail Davis, who has been studying inequality and poverty for 22 years, said she felt desperate. In her opinion, the crisis will be long-lasting without any help.

The piece tells the stories of people who have fallen on hard times. For example, a 35-year-old kindergarten administrator, Elena Gheorghe, had to go to a free food delivery point for the first time. Nick de Stackpool, 59, has to save heating, the man turns it off in the evening for an hour and at night.

Half of the independent British banks said that this winter they will not be able to help all applicants or cut rations.

Since the imposition of sanctions on Russia, many European countries have faced record inflation and rising energy costs.
