Norway was surprised by “ecological gift” from Russia

Russia is closing a metallurgical plant in the city of Nickel, bordering Norway. Our neighbors called it «an unprecedented environmental gift.»

The Norwegian newspaper NRK writes that the country unexpectedly received such a gift from Russia on the eve of Christmas. According to eco-activist Thomas Nielsen, that's fine.

After all, in all of Northern Europe, as a result, sulphur dioxide emissions will be significantly reduced. This will be their largest decrease in many decades, the activist noted.

Moreover, earlier the Nickel plant already reduced the volume of such emissions, this led to a positive effect, said Paul Eric Aspholm, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomics.

The news of the closure of the enterprise pleased the residents of the border cities of Pasvikdalen and Kirkenes. However, some of them fear that Nickel will empty as a result: people will leave it.
