China imposes sanctions on US for supply of weapons to Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian announced upcoming sanctions against a number of US companies. Restrictions will be introduced due to the supply of weapons to Taiwan.

"We have taken appropriate steps to protect our international interests. Sanctions will be imposed on American companies that have played a decisive role in these processes," Zhao Lijian said at a briefing.

According to him, sanctions will be imposed against Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense and Ratheon. "Arms transfers to Taiwan undermine the principle of China alone, violate Chinese sovereignty and undermine our security interests. We express a strong protest against the actions of the United States," added Zhao Lijian.

In July 2020, the US State Department agreed to supply weapons to Taiwan in the amount of $620 million. Then it was reported about supply of Patriot PAC-3.

In October 2020, the US State Department agreed to supply weapons for $1.8 billion. A little earlier, Washington was going to supply Taiwan with weapons for $5 billion. In accordance with the treaty, Taiwan will receive SLAM-ER cruise missiles, HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and ATACMS ballistic missile systems.
