About 29,000 people are imprisoned in Uzbekistan

For the first time, the Government of the country allowed to publish data on the number of prisoners and on the number and location of places of deprivation of liberty.

Uzbekistan named the number of convicts in prisons - more than 29 thousand people. There are about 7,000 people in penal colonies. The data appeared on the website of the Penalty Execution Department of the Interior Ministry of Uzbekistan.

This information was the first time the Interior Ministry made this information public. The Ministry pushed the Ministry to publish this information after a government resolution that allowed them to report the number of prisoners and the location and number of penal institutions and pretrial detention centers.

Uzbekistan has 54 penitentiary institutions: 18 colonies, 25 penal settlements, and 11 pretrial detention centers.
