Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture Begins Evacuation of 190,000 People

Prefectural authorities register the maximum rainfall ever recorded.

Authorities in Shizuoka prefecture in Japan are evacuating about 190,000 people after heavy rains, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing city administrations in the region.

Since the morning of July 26, it has been raining heavily in the western prefecture of Shizuoka due to moist air from the sea and tropical cyclones. So, in Hamamatsu, 78 mm of rain fell in one hour, which was the highest hourly rainfall in July on record. Already at 8:25 the city hall issued an order to evacuate about 190 thousand people in some parts of the city. The city of Kosai also issued an evacuation order for 2,000 people at 8:15 am, Asahi Shimbun reports.

Earlier, on July 4, NHK TV channel, citing local authorities, reported that a typhoon was approaching Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan, which is why residents were advised to evacuate. It was reported that emergency messages were received by 311 residents of Kushima.

Another 34 people were evacuated on July 24 in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan due to the eruption of the Sakurajima volcano. Due to the eruption, the authorities declared the highest, fifth level of danger, which implies an urgent evacuation of people.
