In County Cork, Ireland, an elderly woman lost both her legs due to an infection following insect bites. The woman's rehabilitation lasted a month and a half.
This is reported by the publication CorkBeo.
69-year-old Josie Rowley is a native of Great Britain. In the 1980s, she moved to Ireland, in the village of Darrus, where she raised six children.
Last September, Rowley discovered itchy insect bite marks on her shins. The woman thought the wounds would heal on their own. But the bites became infected and painful sores began to form around them. A few months later, one of Rowley's granddaughters brought her to the hospital for a checkup. The doctors tried to keep the infection from spreading, but were unable to. The woman suffered from pain and could not walk. The doctors then decided to amputate the patient's legs above the knees to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of her body.
The woman was in rehabilitation for a month and a half. When she was discharged from the hospital, she moved in with her daughter Jen, who had to quit her job to take care of her mom. Jen is in the process of obtaining a special allowance while other relatives of the elderly woman are looking for funds to purchase a vehicle designed to transport a person in a wheelchair. In this way, they want to give Rowley back some of her lost freedom.
