On some days, the daily migration figures exceeded 10,000 people, while last month the average was 6,400 illegal immigrants per day.
Federal authorities in the United States said nearly 50,000 illegal migrants entered the U.S. in five days last week.
"In just five days last week, Border Patrol agents processed nearly 50,000 migrants who entered the U.S. illegally," the CBS television station said.
The channel notes that record numbers of illegals crossing the southern border from Mexico are being seen in many U.S. cities.
About one and a half thousand migrants are processed legally at border checkpoints by appointment through an online application.
In December, more than 60 migrants trying to cross into the European Union drowned in a boat crash off the coast of Libya.
