Apple component factory burns down in Shanghai

Firefighters were unable to cope with a 24-hour fire that engulfed a factory in Shanghai. The blaze was extinguished by 123 vehicles, 900 people and eight robots.

The Shanghai Shengrui Electronic Technology factory, which produces components for iPads and MacBooks, was on fire.

The Shanghai government's press office said the emergency happened on April 23. Why the fire broke out is not yet known.

The area of the fire was very large: the fire engulfed the entire factory. Six factory workers and two firefighters lost their lives. The fire was fought for a day.

The causes of the incident are being investigated not only by law enforcement and specialist agencies, but Apple is going to conduct its own investigation, local media reports say.

The company is a subsidiary of Taiwan-based manufacturer Casetek Group, which was bought by Pegatron in 2020.
