The decision to temporarily not charge 18.4 cents per gallon must be approved by Congress.
President Joe Biden intends to temporarily abolish the fuel tax in the U.S. because of the record high gasoline prices. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper writes that the U.S. head of state and his advisers have been discussing this measure for several months.
Biden will give a speech on rising gasoline prices in the U.S. on Wednesday, June 22. The decision to temporarily not charge an 18.4-cent fuel tax on each gallon (3.785 liters) must be approved by Congress. So far, according to The Wall Street Journal, such a decision by the U.S. president seems symbolic.
Democrats and Republicans are skeptical about repealing the fuel tax. They think the measure won't stabilize the situation with high fuel prices.
The U.S. president has repeatedly said that the special operation in Ukraine has led to higher gasoline and food prices in the world and in the United States. Biden blamed Russian President Putin for the record inflation in the United States.
