They had access to hundreds of thousands of diplomat and U.S. government emails.
The correspondence of the US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns and the curator of East Asian direction in the State Department Daniel Kritenbrink with the American government became available to hackers associated with Beijing. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal newspaper with reference to anonymous sources.
As part of the cyberattack compromised hundreds of thousands of e-mails of officials and diplomats of the US government.
The newspaper notes that the emails of diplomats did not contain classified information, but the hackers obtained data on the planning of visits of officials and the intra-departmental discussion on U.S. relations with China.
Earlier, the newspaper wrote that Chinese hackers had attempted to hack into the US State Department's e-mail account before Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's trip to Beijing.
