Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Congress on Thursday, Nov. 17, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she will not seek re-election as leader of the Democratic Party caucus in the Legislature.

"With tremendous confidence in our caucus, I will not seek re-election as the Democratic leader of the next Congress," Pelosi said.

She noted that she is ceding leadership to a new generation of Democrats and thanked those who are willing to "shoulder this tremendous responsibility."

Nancy Pelosi is not retiring and will continue to serve in the next Congress.

Recall that on November 8, the U.S. held midterm elections to Congress. Republicans won the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and it is their leader who will be the next speaker of the lower house. It is expected that this will be Kevin McCarthy, who is the head of the Republican Party faction in the current Congress.
