A new pandemic could break out in the world at any moment, warned World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Speaking in Geneva at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INGO) drafting an agreement on pandemic prevention, Ghebreyesus said the current outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza suggests that the next pandemic could be just around the corner and could come at any moment.

The WHO chief described the document being developed by the IGO as a “generational agreement”, noting the relevance of the body's work.

According to him, the conclusion of negotiations in 2024 would be a historic event. Ghebreyesus believes that reaching consensus on unresolved issues is possible within a short time.

Earlier scientists explained the resistance of many people to the coronavirus.
