Recall that the threat of a tsunami was announced in a number of prefectures of Japan on the night of January 16 in connection with the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in the Kingdom of Tonga. In coastal areas, the wave height reached 1.2 meters. More than 230 thousand residents of the country received a message about the immediate evacuation.

The wave swept into the ocean and overturned about 20 ships anchored in ports located in the west of the country. Fortunately, there were no people on their sides. There are no reports of casualties.

Japan's National Meteorological Administration has already canceled a tsunami warning that had been in effect for about 2 p.m., while there is still the possibility of a slight change in water levels along the coast of Japan.

The US Geological Survey reported that the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga, the center of which was located at a depth of 33 kilometers, was the largest since December last year. A volcanic eruption has killed two people in Peru.

Evacuation also took place in the Pacific Islands. Due to high waves in American Samoa, more than a hundred families were evacuated from villages located on the island of Sawaii. States on the country's west coast also warned of the possibility of a tsunami.
