According to information provided by the Bloomberg agency, COVID-19 incidence is on the rise in the Asian region. A particularly notable jump in new cases of coronavirus infection was recorded in Hong Kong, a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, and Singapore.
The agency reports a steady increase in the number of cases in the region over several months, periodically leading to new waves of the pandemic. Authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore have stepped up vaccination campaigns, urging the public, especially people at risk, to be revaccinated.
In mid-May, the head of the Infectious Disease Department of the Hong Kong Health Protection Center, Ou Jiajun, warned on television of a “significant level” of COVID-19 spread. He pointed out that the previous week was the highest number of illnesses since April this year. The number of calls for medical attention, hospitalizations and concentrations of the virus in sewage are on the rise.
Bloomberg also notes that Singapore, an important financial center in the region, is on high alert for a new wave of coronavirus. The country's Ministry of Health released updated COVID-19 incidence data in May for the first time in a year.
According to the release, distributed only when “significant outbreaks” occur, from late April to early May, the number of infections increased 28% from the previous week and hospitalizations rose 30%. Authorities advise citizens to take precautions, including wearing masks in crowded areas.
