A decision on the appointment of a new head of the department will be made in the near future.
In a briefing, German Cabinet spokeswoman Christiane Hofmann said Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz accepted Christine Lambrecht's resignation as German defense minister.
According to a government spokeswoman, Scholz thanked Lambrecht for working under difficult circumstances.
"The chancellor will soon submit a proposal to the president for a successor," she said.
In addition, Lambrecht will serve as head of the department until she receives a letter of resignation from her position, which the head of state will present to her. There's currently no information about the specific date of dismissal of the minister.
Earlier it became known about Lambrecht's decision to resign. She explained her intentions by pressure from the media, but it is known that the minister has been repeatedly criticized for her actions.
