The occasion was the likely deployment of ECOWAS armies on Benin territory to invade Niger.
The military who have seized power in Niger have announced the termination of the military pact with neighboring Benin allegedly because of the deployment of the armies of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the territory for the invasion of Niger. This is reported by Reuters with reference to the rebels' statement on national television.
Niger's military junta said that Benin authorities "authorized the deployment of soldiers, mercenaries and military equipment" on its territory, and therefore Nigerian authorities "refuse the agreement on military cooperation" with Benin.
In late July, the military removed Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum from power and formed a "National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland." ECOWAS countries said they were prepared to intervene militarily in Niger to restore constitutional order.
Niger in late August authorized the armies of Burkina Faso and Mali to enter the country in the event of an attack.
