Fish have died en masse in Poland's third largest river, the Odra. This is a major ecological disaster, the head of the state agency "Polish Waters" Przemysław Datca said at a briefing.

He said that already more than 10 tons of dead fish have been caught from the river. Daca added that this is a "gigantic and outrageous ecological catastrophe". He demanded that the culprit be held accountable.

The Environmental Inspectorate has begun examining water samples, so far it has been found that the summer rise in water temperature is not the main cause of the incident.

The companies on the Odra River are currently being inspected.

It is specified that the poisoned water is moving further and therefore the residents are asked to stay away from the reservoirs.
